Most Popular T-Shirt Printing Methods

There are a variety of methods that can be used when printing a design into a T-Shirt, and each method has its pros and cons in relation to the others. The three main types of methods for T-Shirt printing are screen printing, heat transfer, and direct to garment.

The first type of method is screen printing. By far the most popular method and also one of the easiest mainly because it requires the least amount of tools to accomplish. When screen printing, a woven mesh is used and a design in the form of a stencil is placed on top of the mesh, which then resembles a screen. After this, the blank T-Shirt is placed on a table underneath the screen. Then, the screen is placed on top of the shirt and is pressed down with force while a squeegee or roller is moved over the top of the screen which forces the ink onto the shirt to create the design. This method is recommended when the volume of printing to be done is mid to large, as it is fast and economical.

Another common method used for T-Shirt printing is heat transfer. This is a more complicated process but allows for more extensive designs and will ensure the final design is much clearer and crisper than a simple screen printed shirt. First the design needs to be printed using the right combination of ink, printer and paper. The design is placed upon the shirt and a type of heat source is then used to transfer the ink onto the shirt, which then dries the ink quickly and ensures it sticks for good. The most common tool used for the heat source is a heat press, on a production environment or a clothes iron for a homemade product. This method is recommended when the volume of printing to be done is low to mid, as it is slower and not so economical.

The final main method for creating T-Shirt designs is DTG, or direct to garment. This is the newest type of printing, and slowly but surely has become a method used by many major manufacturers of T-Shirts, mainly because it offers the best picture and can allow for a variety of designs. The shirt is placed in a type of ink jet printer and the design is then laser-printed into the T-Shirt, creating a crisp and clear image. Volume will depend on type of DTG printer used, with the smallest one having only one head. This method is recommended for any volume of printing, speed and cost will depend on the DTG printer used.
